Methanol fuel cells at COP15

December 1, 2009: Innovative technology which uses methanol to make fuel cell vehicles competitive unveiled at COP15, from December 7th - 18th, 2009 in Copenhagen.

Serenergy together with Metha Energy Solutions and Lithium Balance have developed a Fiat Scudo 9 seater van into an electric and fuel cell hybrid which uses hydrogen gas as its feedstock instead of hydrogen.
 
The fuel cells continuously recharge the batteries while the vehicle is being driven. This overcomes the primary problem of electric vehicles - namely the action radius. With the fuel cells, the range can be increased to 500 kilometres (310 miles), while the secondary problem – battery charging time – is eliminated since methanol can be tanked as fast and as easily as gasoline. Therefore methanol fuel cell technology  does not aim to outcompete electric powered vehicles as a concept, but support it. According to reporting in the professional journal Ingeniøren (The Engineer), the vihicle makes it possible to reduce CO2 emissions by 70% in relation to an internal combustion engine car.
 
The UN Climate Change Conference COP15 is under way in Copenhagen, with teams of delegates from 192 countries taking part. This gives the best opportunity imaginable to showcase the vehicle.

Airborne fuel cells

July 8, 2009: Antares DLR-H2 aircraft presentation and first public flight at Hamburg Airport,Germany July 7, 2009.

Antares DLR-H2 is the world’s first piloted aircraft capable of taking off using only power from a fuel cell system. On July 8, 2009, the aircraft was successfully flight tested before an audience at the Hamburg airport. The aircraft sets new standards in the field of high-efficiency, zero-emission energy conversion and clearly demonstrates the capability of Serenergy’s HTPEM fuel cell technology.

The research aircraft is collaboration between German Aerospace Centre (DLR), Lange aviation, Serenergy (fuel cell stack subsystem) and BASF (electrolytic membrane and catalysts). Four serenus 390 Air C fuel cell stack modules are used as the propulsive energy source supplying the necessary peak power for take-off.

Fuel Cell Powered Vessel

September 1, 2008: Fuel cell powered vessels will contribute significantly to the reduction of harmful emissions from ships. 

Emissions from ships comprise 11-16% of the global NOx-emissions, 8% of the global SOx-emissions and 2% of the global CO2 emissions. NOx-emissions from ships can be reduced by at least one order of magnitude by utilizing fuel cell technology compared to, for example, diesel powered vessels.

Serenergy has supplied fuel cells for a research project led by the Norwegian companies, CMR Prototech and IRISH on a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. A small passenger ferry operating in the Bergen Harbour is currently being used in the development and experimental verification of the installed system. SerEnergy involvement provides important knowledge regarding fuel cell operation in saltwater environments.

Prototype electric/fuel cell hybrid car

August 2008: Serenergy is working in collaboration with the Danish battery performance optimization expert, Lithium Balance, and other partners to develop a hybrid fuel cell/electric car. 

The fuel cell will be used to continuously recharge the battery while the car is running, thus overcoming the range limitation problem associated with pure electric cars. The fuel cell will also be powered by a liquid fuel, reformed on-board, overcoming the challenges presented with production, storage and transport of pure, compressed hydrogen.

Currently, a 9-person bus is being used as test vehicle in Denmark. Involvement in this project gives Serenergy valuable experience integrating fuel cells with other sustainable energy sources as well as experience within the field of sustainable transport which is going to have much attention the coming years.
